Jennifer Shalant and Luke Groskin

THE rock hyrax, a relative of the elephant that resembles an obese gerbil, is not likely to inspire romance. But for Luke Groskin and Jennifer Shalant, who work at the Bronx Zoo, the small creature played a part in starting their relationship.

Mr. Groskin is a videographer for the Wildlife Conservation Society. He had been working at the Bronx Zoo, which is run by the society, for less than a year when in 2004 he first spotted Ms. Shalant, a delicate, dark-haired woman, standing next to the Sika deer range.

“And when I heard her voice,” said Mr. Groskin, now 28, “I thought, that’s a great voice. That’s a voice I could hear all the time.”

Suzanne Bolduc, a co-worker, said his crush was obvious: “Luke was clearly smitten with Jenny. He talked about her constantly. But she had a boyfriend. I didn’t think he had a shot.”

But the timing was not good, and both had reservations about dating a co-worker.

Ms. Shalant is a managing Web editor for the conservation society. Although she and Mr. Groskin worked in neighboring trailers behind the Birds of Prey enclosure at the zoo, many of their exchanges for the first years they knew each other had been through e-mail, and most were work-related. Mr. Groskin would send her previews of his video clips about the new animals at the zoo. She was responsible for writing the captions for the videos.
